Puppy Training And Socialization

Submitted by: Bob J. Westhoven

Congratulations you just got a new puppy! Are you ready to get started training him? While there are many aspects to training a puppy, the most important is socialization. There are two types of socialization. The first one is socializing your dog to be comfortable around people. The second form of socialization is teaching your dog to act like a dog and act appropriately around other dogs and other pets.

Dogs that are not properly socialized around people can still act appropriately around their family or human pack. A dog that is not properly socialized around people may become aggressive or scared when strangers enter the home. Some dogs will hide under the bed while others will not stop barking. You may think that having your dog be aggressive toward strangers may be a good way to protect your home, but when that stranger is your neighbour’s five year old child this can be the start of a law suit. A dog that is well socialized is a pleasure when company comes over as well as when you take him or her to the park.

To social your dogs with humans start the training as soon as possible. Be sure to bring people of many ages over to your house and have them greet the dog. Be sure the dog is praised, but not allowed to jump up on the company or other undesirable behaviours. The next thing is to take your dog on regular walks. This way it will see people on the street and not becomes overly excited. While this does not need to be done everyday make sure your puppy has interactions with humans on a regular basis.

It is important to socialize your puppy with other dogs so it learns how to be a dog. Dogs that are not socialized as dogs are often attacked by other dogs because they do not behave properly or your dog will become the aggressor. Your dog may simply be afraid of other dogs and cower when confronted with a member of its own species.

To socialize your dog it needs to interact with other dogs. This often does not occur in homes with only one dog. Try to get your dog to interact with other dogs in your neighborhood by going to your local dog park and playing freely with the other dogs. First, you need to be careful that there are no aggressive dogs in the park. Doggie dates are a fun way to visit with your friends and give your dog a chance to be a dog. Another opportunity is pet stores that allow you to bring your dog while you shop. If you have a cat or another animal in the house, a puppy is your best chance at making sure they will get a long. A puppy is more likely to see a cat as a member of the the family than an older dog that has had no experience with the new animal.

A well socialized dog will not only make your home a more inviting place, but will make the dog happier also.
